Madonna and Billy Bob Thornton
For a taste of these two stars I watched The Next Best Thing and Puss in Boots. Both enjoyable movies. Madonna, although known for her musical career is also a believable actress. The next best thing has a modern story - a gay man and a straight woman parenting another man's child until her right man came along. Such a complicated mess. I feel as if we glorify this 'forward' thinking in relationships, but at the same time we acknowledge the painful and harmful complexity. What a sinful mess our world and our hearts are.
Puss in Boots with Billy Bob Thornton playing Mr. Jack, was a fun movie, but not one of my favourite animated films. A remake of Jack and the Beanstalk with a few other fairy tales twined in, it had some funny notes, but nothing to make me want to watch again.

Black Sabbath
So, not a fan of the old Black Sabbath. I thought some of the lyrics were clever and intriguing, but the musical ability and complexity seemed rather lacking. Some songs played a simple riff over and over for the whole song and there sounded as if there was a skillessness in the musicians. I feel like maybe I'm being too harsh considering this is a rather well-known and popular band, however I just was not convinced that this was music of high quality and talent.

The Shining
Stephen King's 'The Shining', is all it's made out to be. Suspenseful, thrilling, a story that makes you want to stop reading, while at the same time urging you to read on to find out what happens in the end. Every written scene created a clear visual scene in my mind, demonstrating to me the true and genuine skill required to write a good novel. Just as I feared the fear and uncomfortability of continuing to read would become too much, Stephen changed scenes to lighten the suspense just enough to allow me to keep reading. I enjoyed the story, was pleased by the final ending despite my hope that it might have ended differently. A story well-worth reading, if you have the heart for this kind of thing.
